Isle of Lobos

The Isle of Lobos is a nature reserve which is located around a ten minute ferry trip away from Corralejo. This volcanic Island covers an area of around 6 square kilometres, positioned off the north-eastern coast of Fuerteventura. The Isle’s name derived from the large population of seals (lobos del mar) that used to inhabit there, but were killed off many years ago. This is a popular destination for walkers and nature lovers alike to spend the day there. It is also a birdwatchers paradise; many species go to nest high on the crags including Cory's Shearwater and the Herring Gull. Panoramic views of both Fuerteventura and Lanzarote can be gained from this little Isle.

As the Isle has been designated as a nature reserve in 1982 and has been included in the Spanish areas of special protection for birds by the European Union. There are four area zones on the Isle, green - which is an exclusion zone; orange - which is restricted use; blue - which is for moderate use and red - which is for general use. The Isle is home to some flora and fauna that isn’t found anywhere else in the World. There is a clearly marked trail that circles the Isle, which passes the lighthouse at the northern tip; you must stick to these paths to protect the environment. For the climbers it is also possible to climb up to the crater of the extinct volcano Montana Lobos, standing at 127m high – which is the highest point on the Isle. There is a restaurant at El Puertito (little port) which is the only place on the Isle that you can disembark.

Other attractions on the Isle include La Hoya de Las Lagunitas (the valley of the little lagoons), Salador de El Faro (the lighthouse salt marshes), Los Hornitos (the little ovens), el Jable de La Cocina (sand of the kitchen), el Malpais del Interior (the badlands of the interior) and the decrepit Los Edificios Volcánicos (volcanic buildings) on the north coast. The beach at Playa de la Concha is beautiful and has crystal clear waters.

Costa Calma

Costa Calma which means ‘calm coast’ in Spanish is one of the quieter resorts and is located on the south-facing coast towards the south end of The Island. It is mainly a sea, sun and sand destination, offering a superb expanse of golden sand that gently shelves into the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. Tourism here didn’t really take off until 1984 when a main road passing through the resort was completed. There are a number of small shopping centres with restaurants and shops in Costa Calma. There is a Sunday morning market with vendors selling an array of merchandise that begins at around 09.00am and goes on until early afternoon.

Costa Calma Beach is part of the Playa de Sotavento, a long wide beach with a slim strip of scrubland between the beach and the rise where the buildings start. The sea is lovely for swimming and there are a couple of sanitary blocks on the beach itself. This area is popular with naturists, who tend to go the area where there are some shrubs, for solitude. Most mornings, joggers can be seen doing their daily workouts. It is generally possible to find a large stretch of sand for yourself. There are plenty of beach bars, sun beds, and parasols and water activities available including jet skis, windsurfing, and sailing. Winds can be brisk at times in Costa Calma, normally more so in the afternoon, which makes it an ideal location for windsurfing, with best conditions in the summer. A windsurfing school and a diving school can also be found in this resort.

Playa Barca has a long sandy beach that is located to the south-west and it is here in August each year the windsurfing championships are hosted. It's not hard to find a quiet, sheltered spot here even during the height of the season.

Nightlife in Costa Calma is low key, with most entertainment taking place in the more upmarket hotels. Although there are a few bars that have karaoke. There are a number of hotels on the beach front that have various facilities available.
