Playa de las Canteras
The district of Playa de las Canteras is Gran Canaria’s very first tourist resort, it has
many hotels, shops, restaurants, bars and one of Spain’s best urban beaches – the Playa de las Canteras (from which this district gets its
name). Playa de las Canteras is a 3km long cove of sand with a natural reef which is around 200m in length and located 100m off the beach.
This urban beach is perfect for swimming and also offers ideal conditions for all types of water sports.
South of Playa de las Canteras, where the natural rock reef ends, the waves come crashing in,
making this part of the beach ideal for surfers. There are also shops selling all manner of water sports gear and accessories.
A landscaped promenade at the southern end of Playa de las Canteras stretches along the beach
and is lined with many shops, alfresco restaurants, snack bars and cafés. It also leads to the Auditório Alfredo Kraus, a magnum opus of
contemporary architecture and is home to the Las Palmas Philharmonic Orchestra. It was constructed as an accolade to the famous Canary
tenor Alfredo Kraus in 1997; the building also incorporates the Canary Island Congress Centre. This Auditório comprises of ten concert halls (one large concert hall and nine smaller ones) serves as venue for operas, concerts as
well as the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival and the Canary Islands Classical Music Festival.
Agaete
The Town of Agaete is located in the north-east of the Island, around 30km from the capital -
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The climate in Agaete is pleasingly warm and has low precipitation; it does not get the trade winds since it
faces north-west and because of its geographic position. Agaete has a rich archaeological heritage, where examples of the cultural aspects
of the native citizens of Gran Canaria can be seen.
There are several sites that were the habitats in stone dwellings at El Valle de Guayedra, at
the beach of El Risco, in Tirma, or in La Palmita. There are also caves dug into the rock which were used as granaries in the era of the
native inhabitants, which are located in la Montaña de Berbique, on the walkway that is known as “Camino de San Pedro a Tamadaba”. A
significant Burial mound is also found here - the Necrópolis del Maipés, which has been turned into an Archaeological
Park.
