However, ‘Guía’ is best known for its Queso de flor (Flower Cheese) which is made of sheep
and cows milk mixed with the juice of the flowers of the artichoke, giving this cheese its remarkable, unique taste and has been awarded
many prizes. The very popular Fiesta del Queso (Cheese Festival) is celebrated each May to pay homage to the skill of creating this
speciality cheese.
The pre-Hispanic Cenobio de Valerón is located around 5km east of Guía. It is a collection of
around 300 graves that have been dug out of the soft rock on various levels. These caves were used for grain storage, which were simple to
protect because of their exclusive position, and for Religious rituals.
Arucas
The Town of
Arucas is located on the north coast of the Island, sited beneath a dormant volcano. the grand Church of
San Juan Bautista is the main popular attraction here and was carved in stone by local
workers. The town is also the centre of sugar and rum production on the Island and visitors can visit the Fabrica y Museo del Ron to see
how sugar cane is turned into rum. The Montana de Arucas viewpoint is located just a short walk from the town, where panoramic views of the
northern coastline can be seen.
Attractions in Gran Canaria
The Holiday World leisure and amusement park
The Holiday World leisure and amusement park is located in Campo Internacional in Maspalomas.
It has been totally rebuilt and since it has re-opened, it has become very popular with both visitors and locals, particularly at the
weekends.
The newly refurbished Holiday World has a traditional fun fair having many exhilarating
attractions like a 27m high Ferris wheel, a roller coaster, a laserdrome, shooting stalls, seal and parrot shows and many more things to
amuse everyone. It also contains a leisure centre - with a bowling alley, amusement arcades, a ‘wellness centre’ with a health spa and a
high-tech gym, a choice of cafés and restaurants and two night clubs (one of which is a salsa club).
Ocean Park
Ocean Park is located only a few hundred metres from
the Holiday World leisure and amusement park in Maspalomas. It is the smallest Water Park on the Island, but has a number of
swimming pools and slides to keep everyone happy all day. There are also restaurants, snack bars and shops.
Aquasur
Aquasur is located near Maspalomas (on the same road as Palmitos Park).
It is the biggest water park in Gran Canaria covering a area of some 130,000 sq metres. The pools cover an area of 5,300 sq metres and it
has an amazing 33 slides and 13 fun attractions such as Surf Beach, Congo River, Crazy Race, Kamikaze, Rapids, Winder, Aquamania, Twister,
the exotic mini-park Polinesia, children and adult’s swimming pools, mini-golf and much more. Mamut and Adrenalina are two new recently
added attractions. There are ample amenities at Aquasur that include Self-service restaurants, a pizzeria, coffee bars, shops, changing
rooms, extensive garden areas and free parking.
Palmitos
Park
Palmitos Park
is located around 6km inland from Arguineguin on the south
coast of the Island, thousands of birds, fish, trees, plants and there is an amazing range of orchids to be found in the park and the
orchid house is the biggest in the Canary Islands. There is also a cactus garden , a massive butterfly house and an aquarium that features
a recreated riverbed and of course the obligatory Parrots.
Reptilandia
Reptilandia
is located on the outer edge of Gáldar (on the way from Gáldar to Agaete)
in the northwest of the Island.
Spiders, snakes and alligators can be seen inside and you'll
find crocodiles, different species of monkey, lizards, tortoise, turtles and terrapins outside. the Komodo Dragon found here is said to
be the largest lizard in the world.
