Boat tours around the Island can be an awesome experience, from a simple rubber raft to a luxurious catamaran. Some of the tours will have added activities like diving or whale watching and more.

Big game sportfishing in Hawaii's deep near-shore waters is another popular activity. Many charters depart from the Nawiliwili small boat harbor in Lihue, Anini Beach on the North Shore, or Port Allen on the West Side.

The prime time for whale watching is from late November to early May on Kauai. It is possible to see whales from the shore, but you can take a boat tour to get a closer view. Some of the favourite locations for whale spotting include: The Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, the Kalalau Trail on the North Shore, Kukui O Lono Park at Kalaheo, and Poipu Beach.

Many companies offer tours in All Terrain Vehicles to explore the Island of Kauai, you will be able to visit areas that you may not otherwise find very easy to get to.

Lihue, Nawiliwili and Kalapaki

Lihue (the County seat) is probably the first sight you’ll see of the Island of Kauai arriving by either air or cruise ship, it was founded by sugar planters and inhabited by descendants of Filipino and Japanese cane cutters.  Lihue is the Government and commercial center of the Island. Nawiliwili Harbor is the Island's major commercial shipping center and cruise ship port. Neighbouring Nawiliwili and Kalapaki have their own attractions too.

Grove Farm Homestead Museum is located in Lihue; it was once the plantation home of George N Wilcox. It has been conserved with the original buildings and furnishings depicting life on a sugar plantation.

The Lihue Lutheran Church is a dedicated reproduction of the original structure that was built in 1885 and destroyed by Hurricane Iwa in 1982. In 1881, German Immigrants arrived to work at the Lihue sugar plantation. The architecture of the Church reflected their long journey by ship. The floor slants like the deck of a ship; the balcony is the captain’s bridge; the ceiling resembles the hull; the lights are ship lanterns; and the pulpit the forecastle.

Wailua Falls are located near Lihue, at the southern end of the Wailua river. The water cascades down in two streams and drops around 80ft below. The television series ‘Fantasy Island’ used this waterfall in their opening credits.

The Historic Kilohana Estate is located past Lihue toward Puhi and the Kauai Community College campus. This is a restored plantation estate that depicts life as it was in the 1930’s. It now features shops and a restaurant. The thirty five acre estate features tropical gardens and an old plantation Village. Tours by carriage with Clydesdale horses of the grounds are available. Hawaiian luaus are regularily staged.
