Lanzarote
GuinateTropicalPark
Guinate Tropical Park is located in the scenic and serene setting of Guinate, in the northwest mountain region of
Lanzarote, and overlooked by Monte Corona one of the highest peaks on the Island. This 45,000sqm park has waterfalls, lagoons, beautiful gardens and over a thousand exotic
birds and animals. The parrot shows take place every hour and is very entertaining. There is a children’s play area and a restaurant and
bar.
TimanfayaNational Park
This exceptionally beautiful park is of significant scientific, geologic and geomorphologic
interest. In 1732, large parts of the Island were destroyed by volcanic eruptions, and then in 1824 after more volcanic action, smaller
craters were formed. This left an immense area of the Island covered in a unique black desert of volcanic lava creating this amazing landscape. Timanfaya
is one of the best examples of a volcanic environment meagrely vegetated and inhabited by rare species that feed upon organic matter
carried by the wind. A tour guide will take you across the volcanic landscape and will show you its geothermal anomalies. The snack bar and
restaurant, known as Isolte de Hilario, was designed by the Island's most renowned artist - Cesar Manrique. You can’t fail to notice the wardens outside the
restaurant demonstrating the immense heat that still emits from the volcano. At the bottom of Timanfaya, there is a camel park that offers
10-minute camel rides up the steep side of the volcano.
There is a visitor Centre close by at Mancha Blanca and is very interesting. The exhibits and
demonstrations divulge the power and effects of volcanoes in an understandable and straightforward way. A 15 minute film is accompanied by
a short replication of the noise, smoke and smell of a volcano and there is free entry.
The Cesar Manrique Foundation
Cesar Manrique was born on the Island in 1919 and was an artist, environmentalist and a landscape architect. The Foundation
(founded in 1992) is situated in the home that Manrique lived in and is located in Taro de Tahiche. The Foundation houses some of
Manrique’s works along with his collection by artists such as Picasso, Miro, Chillida and Klee. Due to Manrique’s influence, there are
stringent construction laws in place that prevent the construction of high-rise buildings and specify which colours can be used to paint
them. Billboard hoardings are also banned.
Jameos del Agua
Jameos del Agua is located near Arrieta and is a unique creation of Caesar Manrique. Making
use of massive bubbles in the lava flow he created an underground cafe/restaurant, dance floor, concert hall and a subterranean lake and
the rocks are dotted with minute blind white crabs that are exclusive to the Island. There is a fabulous blue swimming pool that has palm trees growing at the side and gives an
air of serenity. Curving steps set into the rock lead up and down into this distinctive setting and plants adorn the rocky walls. Jameos
del Agua becomes a club on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays - where you can eat, drink and dance in a fantastic ambience.
Cueva de los Verdes (The GreenCaves)
Cueva de los Verdes which are known as the Green caves are located not far from Jameos del
Agua near Arrieta. These caves are part of the Atlantida underground Cave system which was formed some 3000 years ago during the eruptions
of Monte Corona. Regular hour long guided tours take visitors through 2km of these tunnels, with distinctive lighting and music adding to
the experience of the tour. The lowest part of the cave is occasionally used as a concert hall. The original inhabitants, the Guanches,
used to shelter here from Pirates that the Island once suffered.
Jardin de Cactus
Jardin de Cactus is a cactus garden located between Guatiza and Mala and was the last venture
of Cesar Manrique. An old quarry was transformed into a huge impressive cactus garden that has almost 10,000 plants; over a thousand of
them are different species.
Valley de la Geria
Valley de la Geria is located along the road from Uza to Mozaga; vineyards have been created
out of individual hollows that have been carved out of the lava of this extraordinary black volcanic landscape. The fresh dry white wine
that is produced from them can be tasted in any of the bodegas (wine cellars) off the Uga-Masdache Road and in Uga. Bodega El Grifo is the oldest winery
on the Island and has an attractive wine museum; museum open from 10.30am-6.00pm; entry is free.
