Mirador del Rio
Mirador del Rio is located around 7km north of Haría, it is a lookout point positioned almost 500m above sea
level. From either of its two look-out points on a clear day, you can see the Islands of Montaña Clara and Alegranza. The nearer and
larger Island of La Graciosa is constantly observable and the lookout faces over the harbour Village of Caleta del Sebo which is only 1km away. There is a section that has been carved out of the cliff behind the
viewpoint and it is reached via a tunnel and a spiral staircase where a snack bar can be found. The Famara cliffs can be seen on the left
which is a significant botanical site, around twenty species of plant unique to Lanzarote grow here.
The Museo Agricola El Patio is located in Tiagua and is an open air museum reflecting
agricultural and rural tradition. This perfectly restored (in 1994) traditional farm dates back to around 1845, when a group of poor
farmers began to work this fertile land. In the early 20th Century, this was the largest and well run estate on the Island, but by the second half of the Century, many workers left this rural area to work in the
tourism industry, which had started to grow by then.
An old manor house on the right side of this museum complex, where you can have a look around
the rooms and out into the grape press, bodega and grain store. There is also a wine museum, a small Chapel and a garden featuring cacti
and other endemic plants. A variety of animals, including chickens, donkeys and dromedaries are kept in the courtyard. The main
agricultural museum comprises of two tenderly renovated windmills which you can see how corn was ground into gofio. There are also
exhibitions that depict hard-working rural life on Lanzarote. There is also a cactus garden, a chapel and a wine museum, wine and goat's
cheese that has been produced on the farm are available to purchase.
Museo del Campasino (Museum house of the farmer)
The Museo del Campasino is located on the road between San Bartolome and Mozaga and entry is
free. It is a replica of a traditional farm building with a kitchen and a cottage workshop, there is also a restaurant set into the lava.
The Monument al Campasino (monument to the farmer) is close to the museum and was created by Cesar Manrique as an accolade to the
hardworking farmers of the Island and their fight with the land. The monument is symbolically created out of old farm
machinery, fishing boats and water tanks.
The Atlantida Tunnel is the longest volcanic tunnel ever discovered and is around 8km in
length - almost a mile of the tunnel runs underwater. There is also the La Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, all of which are
located in the north-east of Lanzarote. There are many more caves to explore, in other parts of the Island.
Los Hervideros
Los Hervideros are a sequence of caves and blow holes which have been eroded into a former
Lava flow and are located in the south-west of the Island. Los Hervideros means the ‘boiling waters’ - as the waves hurtle into the caves, mountains
of white surf are created, which give the appearance of 'Boiling Waters'. It is possible to walk around the cliffs here and observe the
breakers crashing into the caves from one of the naturally formed 'balconies'.
Dive Sites in Lanzarote include:
Erizos wrecks: This dive is suitable for all levels of experience. RIB dive to the old Puerto de Carmen
harbour out from the wall, buoyed up and set in a range of 20 to 40 meters. You descend down onto the stern of the steel fishing boat -
which is a complete wreck with entry and exit points for qualified penetration divers. This wreck lies on the edge of the reef where
looking out into the blue you can just about see the decaying wooded hulls of the six other wrecks around 15m away and set at 35m in depth.
Marine life includes Barracuda amberjacks and good size tuna fish and stingrays. Maximum depth is 40m.
The Cathedral: This dive is suitable for experienced divers. You will enter the water from the
beach of Playa Chica and snorkel out to immediately outside the bay where you should free descent down to 12
meters and fin yourself on a 150-degree bearing where the reef starts at 18 meters. Making a left turn at the reef you will locate sponges
and groupers. It is possible to see eagle rays and sting rays in the winter and early summer months. The large cave that is known as the
Cathedral can be found at 70 degrees. Excellent sized groupers of at least 50 kg can be seen here or there may possibly be an Angel Shark
sleeping on the sandy base. The cave is situated at 28m with blemishes of black coral in the dark corners at the rear of the cave, keeled
barnacles and tube worms line the roof. The maximum depth is 32m.
Blue hole: This dive is suitable for experienced divers and is situated on the southern side from Playa
Chica, descending down to 15m - in the midst of the ropes and buoys that belong to the local fishermen. Where the reef edge appears, if you
stay along the top and look up you’ll see where shoals of young barracuda flit around and twist in mid-water. The tube entrance stands on
the reef top at 24m and 7m wide - with good buoyancy. On descending down through the tube, if you look under the ledges, two timorous but
good size groupers may possibly appear. The exit is at 32m and turns left, and then you follow the wall back. Lots of anemones cover the
rocks and beam fish and pipefish can be seen. The maximum depth is 34m.
Shipwreck Rabat:
This dive is suitable for all levels of experience and is an RIB dive from Arrecife harbour.
The Moroccan fishing vessel 'Rabat' is located just off the Castillo 300 degrees off the Grand Hotel in Arrecife and in front
of the Church on Calle Leon y Castillo. This vessel lies on its port side and bow towards the reef shows no real reason why it sank there.
As there is no damage to the vessel, it’s presumed that it was deliberately scuttled after it was used to transport illegal immigrants to
the Islands. It is about 70 ft long with the bow submersed in 16m and the stern in 33m. This ship, at some point in its life, dragged up huge quantities of fish on its slipway on the stern.
Large shoals of breams and bass surround the vessel and you could see stingrays glide along the bottom towards the stern. The maximum Depth
is 35m.
Richies Reef: This dive is suitable for experienced divers and is an RIB
dive 200m from the shore line of the main esplanade of Puerto Del Carmen. The reef top is found at 18m and the sloping bottom that goes off
into the distance is from 35m. There are lots of overhangs which contain morays that have entrenched themselves into the walls. Caution
must be exercised when entering the overhangs, as barnacles line the ceilings. There is a good variety of fish to be seen, some enormous
groupers, morays, barracuda and octopus. The maximum depth is 36m.
Punta Tiñosa: This dive is suitable for all levels of experience and is an RIB dive to the south of
Puerto Del Carmen's harbour – in the direction of the marina of Puerto Calero. You either follow the anchor line, or free descend to around
12m where you’ll find the reef, created from a cascade of lava which has solidified under the sea. After going directly out and increasing
in depth - you will locate a small wreck at 30m that has completely worn away leaving an embedded boat shape with bits and pieces of the
wreck around it. Numerous beams and barracudas yield to the walls. The maximum depth is 30m.
The Wreck -Temple Hall: This dive is suitable for all levels of experience and is located in between Arrecife and
Costa Teguise. This is a large ship that has broken in two; its bow is in 12m of water and has broken completely free while the stern, the
larger section of the two, is sloping out of the water. The actual ripped section is under at 10 meters and entrance is possible but,
again, extreme caution must be taken as there are sharp edges which stick out. Barracudas and beams are common to this area and if you look
underneath the hull, you’ll see sleeping rays. The Maximum depth is 18m.
