Maui
The
Island of Mauiis the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands and covers an area of around 727 square miles. It has been
nicknamed the ‘Valley Island’ and has many excellent, long, and palm-fringed beaches; a large, volcanic national park, an abundance of
visiting humpback whales, and plenty of waterfalls and valleys.Maui has three airports: Hana, Kahului, and Kapalua.
The weather changes considerably depending on the area of
the Island, but it is normally between 75 and 80 degrees F all year round.
The South Side and West Side are usually hot and dry, while the East and North sides get more
rain and cooling trade winds. In the winter months, you might see snow on top of Mount Haleakala.
Lahaina Town is the Capital of Maui and was originally an
ancient fishing Village.
This historic Town nestles between the Auau Channel
facing Lanai
and the abundant
peaks and valleys of Mauna Kahalawai (West Maui
mountain
range). The structural design of Lahaina is noticeably Colonial with wooden buildings that show their
date of origin. The pretty Lahaina Harbour is the leaving point for many day cruises, in addition to the daily ferry service to the
nearby Molokai and Lanai Islands.
Maui is a primary whale-watching centre in the Hawaiian Islands because many Humpback whales spend the winter in the protected Auau Channel between the Islands of Maui County. Every
autumn, the whales migrate around 3,500 miles from Alaskan waters and spend the winter months in the northern hemisphere, mating and birthing in the
temperate waters off Maui. Humpbacks are an endangered species that are protected by U.S. federal and Hawaii state law. It is estimated that there around 3,000
humpbacks in the North Pacific.
Accommodation varies on Maui from: Hostels, Bed and Breakfasts, Condos, to Hotels and Resorts
that will suit all budgets. Nightlife on Maui includes: bars and night clubs in
the resort areas of Lahaina, Kaanapali, Kahului, Wailea, Kihei and Makawao. They vary from the latest L.A. style rage to hip-hop, R&B,
jazz, blues and classics. Many Resort Hotels have various evening music events, ranging from melodious piano to a big band or a relaxing
Hawaiian trio.
The Maui Symphony Orchestra season
runs throughout fall and spring, and the Maui Academy of Arts stages productions from July through to May. Maui’s leading entertainment venue is
The Maui Arts & Cultural Center with its first-rate theatre facilities, galleries, and studio space.
This is a must see event, so whilst
there during these periods, please do try and take in some of these events.
