Negril
Main resort area on the west coast
Negril is the main resort area on the west coast of the island and extends from the 19th Century Negril Lighthouse in the Parish of Westmoreland in the south, to Bloody Bay in Parish of Hanover in the north. Negril is extremely popular and has grown swiftly in recent years. When the construction of new roads and drainage canals were implemented during the 1960’s, Negril became a haven for hippies who set up a colony there. Their laid back approach to life has not changed much in Negril since.
The main draw to Negril is Seven Mile Beach; there are a few attractions to visit, but not on the scale of the busier areas of the Island.
The Negril Royal Palm Reserve is a gorgeous and serene forest in the Negril Great Morass. Not only will you see the Royal palms here (which you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the world), there are over 300 wildlife species and more than a hundred different plants. You can take a guided tour along the wooden Royal Palm Boardwalk Trail through the morass swamp forest and even climb the 30’ observation tower to get an overhead view of the Negril Great Morass. There is also a museum where you can learn about native plants and wildlife. Other activities available include horseback riding, nature walks, bird watching and fishing.
The Negril lighthouse is located at the Western end of Negril; the concrete tower is 66’ tall and the light is elevated 100’ above sea level. The lighthouse is the only historical landmark in Negril and is fully operational. If you don’t mind the climb up 103 steps, you can see the panoramic views from on top of the lighthouse. On the way you will see the brass lamps and pistons that date back from 1894 when the light was lit with kerosene, solar energy is used these days.
The Whitehall Great House is located on what was an early 300 acre pimento plantation. The house was built by slaves at the end of the 17th Century, but was destroyed by fire in 1985 and has never been restored, leaving just a ruin now. However, it has been said that the new owner plans to restore it. The estate is known for an enormous cottonwood tree that is said to be 900 years old. Amazing views of the Negril coastline and the Great Morass can be seen from here.
The Anancy Family Fun and Nature Park is located on Manley Blvd in Negril and offers hours of fun for the whole family. There are various attractions sure to please everyone including: Go-Karting, train ride, miniature golf and more. The small lake offers fishing and paddleboats and there is a little nature trail to take a relaxing stroll along.
Seven Mile Beach is renowned for its laid back feel and was very popular with the hippies in the 1960’s. Since those hedonistic times, several resorts have sprung up. There are areas of the beach that attract nude bathers and some of the resorts have private nude beaches that are kept private and apart from other areas. The sparkling aquamarine waters, coral reefs, and a background of palm trees add to the attraction of this beach. Besides the beach, you'll find all sorts of clubs, beach bars and open-air restaurants, with an abundance of vendors that sell everything. This beach can get very crowded and some may find the constant harassment of vendors frustrating and annoying.
Long Bay Beach Park is located at the far northern end of Negril beach. If you want a more peaceful setting away from the crowds and vendors then you won’t go far wrong here. Away from the hotel area, there are changing rooms and picnic tables here.
