Oahu surfing paradise Image

On the northwest coast is Makaha, where the winter surf has gigantic waves rolling in. Yokohama Bay (north of Makaha) is where the waves meet a rocky shelf and exposed reef. On the northern shore of Oahu from Haleiwa to Sunset Beach contains many of the main surfing areas including Rocky Point, Banzai Pipeline, Ehukai, Waimea Bay, Chun's Reef, Laniakea, and Sunset Beach.

Along the windward coastline, Kahana Bay and Malaekahana sporadically break, and in Kailua Bay there can be a shore break at Kalama Beach. Waimanalo Bay has a couple of spots as well. Around the coast in the direction of Waikiki are Point Panic, Kahala, and Diamond Head, and immediately past Waikiki there is Ala Moana.

Sailing, kayaking, Parasailing, Kite surfing and Jet Skiing are more of the many activities that can be enjoyed on the Island. With so many diverse things to do, you need never be bored.

Taking a helicopter tour of Oahu will show you some of the more remote areas that visitors don’t always see. Another option is a three hour aeroplane tour from Honolulu airport, taking in six of the eight main Islands. A well informed pilot will explain all there is to know about the Islands.

For golfing enthusiasts, there are around a dozen public and resort golf courses. Some of the public golf courses include: Ala Wai Golf Course on Kapahulu Avenue in Honolulu, and Pali Golf Course, Kamehameha Hwy, Kaneohe.

The Aloha Tower is a famous landmark which is located at pier nine of Honolulu Harbor. It was constructed in 1926 on the water side of the piers to specifically welcome visitors who arrived to the Islands by Ocean Liner. The Tower was built to a height of 10 storeys high (just over 184ft), with a 40ft flag staff on top.  For over forty years it was the tallest building in all of Hawaii, now high rise office buildings tower over it.

The slim tower is topped by a domed cupola which has a balconied opening on each of the four sides. A large clock is under the cupola and has a face on every side. There is an Observation Deck on the 10th floor of the Tower, where panoramic views in four different directions can be seen.

Chinatown is located in downtown Honolulu and covers fifteen blocks. It is thought to be the oldest Chinatown in the United States, dating back over a hundred years. A southeast culture blends together there, and is a maze of gift shops, eateries, galleries and Temples.
