Backpacking Cambodia
Places not to miss in Cambodia
The highlights of any visit to Cambodia
Backpacking in Cambodia
With so many sights to see in
Cambodia, it would be impossible to list them all in this article. It probably would be impossible
to see and do everything in one trip anyway, unless you had unlimited money and time of course, which I’m guessing you don’t. So here is a
selection of what we here at Travel Llama think you should not miss on your trip.
Angkor Temples – The
most visited site in the whole of the country and it is obvious to understand why! The ruins are majestic and so huge that it would take
months to navigate around all of the individual temples and buildings. No visit to Cambodia would be complete without a visit to the jewel of the Khmer empire.
Sihanoukville – While it
is getting more and more developed as time goes on and Cambodia gets more popular it is
still a very quiet resort when compared to the bustle of the Thai islands. It is still possible to find deserted stretches of beach and you
can still find elegant but dilapidated mansions to stay in for a fraction of the cost of a simple guesthouse for example in Ko
Samui.
Mekong River– The mighty and infamous river that runs through the
mainland of South East Asia is known throughout the world mainly due to American Vietnam
War films but it is its beauty and nature which will leave an indelible mark on your mind. Kratie is a popular stop off for travellers as it
gives you a chance to see the freshwater Dolphins of the region, as well as various other wildlife.
Hill tribes of Ratanakiri
– The area of Ratanakiri is a remote province with an marvellous mix of ethnic people to experience and the fact that it is free of
landmines and guerrilla activity makes this an adventure that can be enjoyed relatively safely.
The Khmer People – The
Cambodian people may be amongst the poorest in the world but goodness they are friendly! They have been through so much over their hundreds of
years of history and given that some of the worst events in world history happened here in the not so distant past, they are extremely
welcoming and you will not go far without being approached by a friendly face asking dozens of questions.
