The Mikhailovsky (St. Michael's) Castle is another division of the Russian Museum; it frequently hosts a variety of art
exhibitions. There is a permanent exhibition of portraits of members of the Romanov dynasty and the Russian aristocracy.
There are other excellent Museums in
St Petersburg such as the Academy of Fine Arts Museum which is located on the northern bank of
the Neva River behind the imported ancient Egyptian sphinxes.
It houses a permanent collection of art by past students and faculty since its founding in 1757. Temporary exhibits are also
shown.
The Applied Art Museum showcases permanent exhibits of many unique
items ranging from distinctive glass works to ceramics and porcelain. Exhibitions by students of the academy are also hosted frequently.
The Arctic and Antarctic Museum Exhibits the northern sea
route, the culture of people who reside in the far north and the discovery and study of the Antarctic.
The Museum of Artillery, Engineers and Signal
Corps showcases over 50,000 exhibits which include a variety of artillery pieces, firearms, battle paintings and so on. The
Central Railway Museum has 50,000 exhibits, which portray the
development of the railways in Russia and give details of different railroad
technologies.
The City Cultural Center is housed in Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace houses and has a diverse cultural program with
classical music concerts, folk dance and historical performances. A wax model museum of Russian Emperors is located on the first
floor.
The Dostoyevsky Memorial Museum is dedicated to the eminent Russian novelist
who spent the last years of his life there and where he wrote one of his greatest novels "The Brothers Karamazov". The restored rooms,
personal possessions, literary exhibit and photographs depicting the writer's remarkable personal life and brilliant
career.
The Hermitage Museum occupies a number of buildings including
the Winter Palace, Small, Old and New Hermitages. The museum
has over 3 million works including applied art, archaeological finds, coins, graphic art, paintings and sculptures. The well-known black
square painting by Soviet painter Kazimir Malevich has been acquired by the museum.
The Monument to the Heroic Defenders of
Leningrad is a remarkable monument and museum complex in nationwide acknowledgment of the 900-day Siege of Leningrad during World War II.
The map of the Leningrad defences and a short documentary that
accompanies it are very interesting. Striking mosaics adorn the eastern and western walls of the hall.
There are some very interesting Palace and Park collections to visit and admire the great architecture
and beautiful landscaped gardens. Petergof (Petrodvorets) is a fine example and was once a wonderful summer retreat for Russian
tsars.Pushkin (Tsarskoe Selo) once home to Russian Emperors has three parks with splendid palaces and impressive monuments, pavilions and
park sculptures. Pavlovsk was home to Paul I and his family and the landscaped park is one of the largest in Europe and covers an area of some 600 hectares.
There are over 500 bridges in St Petersburg; this is due to the fact that the city is located over 45 islands. They range from the extremely narrow
pedestrian bridges to the distinctive Medieval and Modern style Bridge and the colossal drawbridges, which cross over the broad
Neva River.
The longest bridge in the city is the
Alexander Nevsky Bridge; it is 905.7m long and 35m wide. The bridge
was constructed in the 1960s and connects the outlying Malaya Okhta area with the city.
Bank Bridge is a pedestrian bridge just 1.85m in width and
is one of St. Petersburg's most familiar landmarks. It is named after
the adjacent building, which once housed the state bank.
