The Statues of Mikhail Kutuzov and Barclay de Tolley by Boris Orlovsky were erected outside of Kazan Cathedral in 1838. These statues are
of two great Generals who led Russia to victory in the Napoleonic Wars. The
Cathedral built in 1801-1811 was made into a memorial to celebrate the victory over Napoleon in 1812, and Kutuzov was laid to rest here in
1813.
The Chizhik Pyzhik is one of the smallest monuments in the World measuring just 11cm was installed in 1994 on
Fontanka Embankment - along by the water.
Classical ballet and International operas brilliantly performed can be appreciated at the Mariinsky
Theatre and Mussorgsky Theatre or drama productions at the oldest drama theatre in Russia -the Alexandrinsky Theatre.
Open-air souvenir
and flea markets are very popular in St Petersburg and there are many of them dotted around the city. Everything from matryoshka dolls to
icons and jewels, oil paintings and prints by local artists are also available to buy. If you’d like your portrait drawn, there are many
artists to be found around the place.
